The song ‘Passion Poured Gently’ from singer Aimua Eghobamien’s album Poured Gently was one of the highlights of the singer’s performance at the Pizza Express Jazz Club in London last night.
The singer also excelled, with classy Monk-influenced pianist Glafkos Kontemeniotis, on Monk’s ‘Rhythm-A-Ning’ and, in terms of tempo and freshness, on ‘In A Sentimental Mood’, topping off Jerome Davies’ fine bass accompaniment and the ever-excellent Rod Youngs (Denys Baptiste quartet) on drums.
Eghobamien is a very sophisticated singer with a strong voice, good ideas (with a sound of his own, referencing Jon Hendricks along the way) and one whose post-bop singer style bridges the worlds of music theatre and jazz without resorting to compromise. Aimua Eghobamien plays tomorrow at Dempsey’s in Cardiff, with the tour reaching the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds on Thursday; Pave in Hull on Sunday; and the Lescar in Sheffield next week (Wednesday 26 Oct).
